Yamunotri: The Seat of Goddess Yamuna
Goddess Yamuna is the sister of Yama (the God of Death). It is believed that bathing in the holy waters of the Yamuna cleanses all sins and protects devotees from an untimely or painful death.
Gangotri: Bringing Heaven to Earth
Gangotri is the place where King Bhagirath performed intense penance for thousands of years to bring the river Ganga down from heaven to wash away the sins of his ancestors. Lord Shiva captured the mighty river in his locks to prevent the earth's destruction.
Kedarnath: Seeking Lord Shiva’s Pardon
After the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas felt immense guilt for killing their kin. They sought Lord Shiva to pardon their sins. Shiva, wanting to avoid them, took the form of a bull and hid in Guptkashi. When found, he dove into the ground, leaving his hump exposed. This hump is venerated at Kedarnath.
Badrinath: The Penance of Lord Vishnu
Legend has it that Lord Vishnu performed severe penance here. Goddess Lakshmi, to shelter him from the harsh weather, took the form of a Badri (jujube) tree. Hence, the deity here is named Lord Badrinath.
